Dr Tipping completed his undergraduate and post-graduate specialist and sub-specialist geriatric medicine training at the university of Cape Town and then moved to Johannesburg in 2007 to founder the division of Geriatric Medicine at the university of the Witwatersrand which is based at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre and Helen Joseph Hospital.

He practices in full-time academic private practice at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Parktown Johannesburg. His main practice interest is cognitive health and disease with ageing.

In 2017 he was promoted to adjunct profession in the department of internal medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. He continues to assist with training sub-specialist geriatricians, and specialist physicians in Geriatric Medicine for the University of the Witwatersrand.

Dr Tipping is an investigator in the Cognitive Function and Dementia sub-study of the Health, Aging and Dementia in South Africa: A Longitudinal Study (HAALSI).

He is on the executive of the Faculty of Consulting Physicians of South Africa (FCPSA) and Board Member of the South African Private Practitioners Forum (SAPPF). When not at work he is off adventuring with his family in the bush, well out of cellphone reception
