Professor Kevin Behrens
Kevin is an Associate Professor at the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics. He holds a doctorate in Public Philosophy and Ethics from the University of Johannesburg and a Masters in Applied Ethics for Professionals from Wits. He has also been awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences Education.
Kevin is the Academic Head of the PhD programme in Bioethics and Health Law, and the Unit Head for the unit “Foundations of Bioethics” in the MSc (Med) in Bioethics and Health Law programme.
His research interests lie in the area of Applied Ethics, in particular in Bioethics and Environmental Ethics. A major emphasis in his work is on applying African moral philosophical notions to ethical questions.
He has published widely in international and national journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Business Ethics. He holds a rating of “Established Researcher” (C1), from the National Research Foundation.
He has been appointed as an expert bioethicist to the Clinical Expert Advisory Panel of the Council for Medical Schemes for the period 2018-2020.
Dr Elsa van Duuren
Dr van Duuren did her a BMedSci, MBChB and specialised as a rheumatologist and at the University of Pretoria. She also completed her MSc (Sports Medicine). She works in private practice as a rheumatologist at the Jacaranda Hospital, Pretoria.
Fields of interest are the inflammatory arthritis’ and general rheumatology, musculoskeletal ultrasound, osteoporosis and sports medicine. She is involved in various pharmaceutical trials in rheumatology and has a research interest in early arthritis.
She is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, University of Pretoria and in the private sector in South Africa and abroad.
She is the president of the South African Rheumatism and Arthritis Association (SARAA) and a Council member and regional chairman of the Arthritis Foundation of South Africa. She is a board member of the Faculty of Consulting Physicians of South Africa and served on the local organising committee for the World Congress of Internal Medicine that took place in Cape Town 2018.
Professor Douglas Veale
Professor Douglas J. Veale is a Professor of Medicine, Director of Translational Research at DAMC, Consultant Rheumatologist and Head of the EULAR Centre of Excellence at St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin and Fellow of The Conway Institute for Biomedical and Biomolecular Research, University College Dublin (UCD) and Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and London.
Ms Nonhlanhla Skosana
Professional nurse Nonhlanhla F. Skosana started her career in 1980 at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, joined Charlotte Maxeke JHB Academic Hospital in 1986. She was the first black night matron, in 1990 she opened the Vascular unit and then joined the Rheumatology team in 1993. Nonhlanhla is a Rheumatology specialist nurse; she did her Rheumatology training at Groote Schuur Hospital in 1996.
Nonhlanhla was the operational manager of rheumatology OPD till 2018 when she retired. She was and is still involved in patient and community education and awareness. She is involved in research and Biologics in rheumatology. She assists the RA foundation with RA workshops and health talks. Her focus is also on HIV/AID’s and RA and has done a Comprehensive course in HIV/AID’s ARV treatment at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
Her position is to see RA patients treated in the early stages of a disease, preserve what is functional and encourage independence.
Professor Phyllis Berger
Phyllis Berger is a BSc Physiotherapy, Adjunct Professor Physiotherapy Department, School of Therapeutic Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand.
Professor Berger has been involved in Pain Management Physiotherapy since 1994. Her special interest is electrical currents and acupuncture. Many patients do not respond to interventional approaches and Professor Berger has developed innovative methods of combining physiotherapy, electrical currents, acupuncture and cognitive measures to improve pain. She has published books and many articles on the above subjects.
Mr Tshepo Mokoena
Mr Mokoena qualified in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in podiatric medicine from the University of Johannesburg. After qualifying he was employed by Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg academic hospital (CMJAH). He is currently the senior Podiatrist at CMJAH and is also involved in the training of undergraduate podiatry students. He has also had extensive experience in a large Multidisciplinary clinic that involves the vascular, endocrinology, rheumatology as well as the foot and ankle clinics. Mr Mokoena also practices privately at Clinix Tshepo Themba and Dr SK Matseke memorial hospitals. He was a part-time lecturer for two years at the University of Johannesburg.
He also arranges bi-monthly workshops with various disciplines at CMJAH. Mr Mokoena recently completed his masters’ degree in Diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers through the University of Johannesburg. He also completed an advanced certificate course in Wound Care and management. He aims to further himself as an academic as well as a clinician; he is in the process of enrolling for a PhD with the University of Johannesburg.
Mr Simiso Ntuli
Simiso Ntuli is currently the Head of Department of the Podiatry department at the University of Johannesburg and practices part-time at Lesedi Private Hospital in Soweto.
Before joining the University of Johannesburg, he worked as a Podiatrist for Ekurhuleni Metro-Municipality and in private practice in Soweto. Simiso spent four years in the United Kingdom where he worked in the NHS employed by the Redbridge PCT.
In January 2010, the University of Johannesburg Podiatry department appointed him as a Lecturer and appointed as Head of Department in 2014.
Mr. Ntuli has presented at local and international conferences primarily on the diabetic and rheumatoid foot. His interest is at risk foot (diabetic and rheumatoid foot) and the role of podiatry within public health particularly within primary health care.
He is the vice-chairperson of the Physiotherapy, Podiatry & Biokinetics Board and serves on the Education Training and Quality Assurance committee of the Health Professions Council of South Africa. He also serves as the chair of prescription rights task team and a vice chair of the education committee of the PPB board.
Professor Asgar Kalla
Professor Asgar Kalla completed his internship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa (1976). Subsequently spent 4 more years at Baragwanath and obtained the FCP exam in 1979. Then moved to Groote Schuur Hospital where he has been engaged in a full-time academic post with research, teaching (undergraduates and post-graduates) commitments as well as clinics in general medicine and Rheumatology. Doctoral thesis (MD) on Osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis at the University of Cape Town in 1989.
Research interests include osteoporosis in rheumatic diseases, disease activity and disability assessment in rheumatoid arthritis, monitoring of disease modification in rheumatoid arthritis, toxicity profiles of slow-acting anti-rheumatic drugs, NSAID gastropathy and mechanisms of bone loss in rheumatic diseases.
Currently, Retired (Emeritus) Professor of Rheumatology at University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital.
Professor Barry Jacobson
Professor Barry Jacobson is currently Head of Clinical Haematology, Department of Haematology, NHLS, Johannesburg Hospital and Head of Surgical Research, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg Hospital while also lecturing 3rd-year medical students in the physiology of Aviation Medicine.
He completed his six-year medical training course at the University of Pretoria, graduating as one of the top five students in a class of 180 students.
Appointed Honorary Medical Chairman-Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand. Responsible for ensuring competent and efficient supply of health services to Sandringham Gardens – 300-bed hospital. Established hospital as University of the Witwatersrand Geriatric Training Facility to enable medical students to rotate at the facility during Community Health block.
